Yucatán: Archaeological attractions

EK BALAM

Ek Balam is located 26 km north of Valladolid and 186 km east of Mérida. "Black or dark Jaguar", possessor of majestic constructions hidden among large trees, has resurfaced from the past to reveal some of its secrets. Ek Balam has 45 structures and is surrounded by two concentric stone walls plus one that links the central buildings. It has a ball game, a very beautiful arch where a sacbé (white path) ended, which in ancient times connected the Mayan kingdoms; we can also find stelae and the so-called hieroglyphic serpents, which are beautifully carved monuments in blocks of stone. The structures meet several architectural styles but there are details that make them unique, like images with wings that resemble angels.

It is located at km 14 of the Mérida-Progreso highway. It was one of the great urban centers that flourished in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, standing out as one of the oldest cities, as there are data that confirm its existence from 500 BC to 1500 AD. It covers around 17 square km in which there must have been more than 8 thousand architectural structures. The city conserves 12 sacbés or white roads, most of which depart from the center and go towards the constructions of the periphery; one of them leads to the cenote Xlakáh, which in Mayan means "Old Town" and from which objects of bone, stone and wood have been rescued. The most outstanding building in this area is the Temple of the Seven Dolls. Through its central door you can see a solar phenomenon each equinox.
